everyday banality from a great distance: conditioning

I heard news, tonight. My two-year-old nephew wouldn’t do something. His mom and dad said: if you fight with us over this, you go to bed without books. He fought with them, over that, quite vigorously, so they said: OK, good night, no books.

He said he was sorry.

He said he would do it now, no fighting.

They said no, sorry, you fought, no books before bed.

He cried.

They remained resolute.

The next night he said: I didn’t fight, mom, so I get books.

She said, yes, you get books. He was very happy.

He will be the only book reading child left in our grim post-apocalypse.
