visa run gaiden

A semi-amusing tale of someone mentioned, tangentially:

I understand my friend from Burma, Nyein, who fled when she was young along with her brother and mother (her father was a political prisoner until she was in her early twenties), wants to return someday to do nursing work. Years ago, when my parents were in Thailand for the kite festival, she was in-country as well, in the north, hanging out with Burmese freedom fighters.

When I learned this, I was typically glib: So did you get to shoot their AKs?

She said she was with the the bureaucratic arm of these freedom fighters. She volunteered, for a time, in an office, doing paperwork. In its fashion, I suppose it makes for a better story.
