supermarket

A large paper umbrella on the sidewalk, its base two sets of vehicle leaf springs crossed and welded together. I thought: I could make two-dozen knife blades out of those, what a waste.

A white man with grey hair running to white crouched on the tile floor of the supermarket aisle next to a much younger Thai man, turning a box of hair coloring in his hands. The younger man encouraging him: you get this, you get so many more girls.

A dog circling around a set of four spirit houses set up at the edge of the parking lot on a slightly raised concrete pad. There was the usual assortment of small snacks and beverages set up on the shelves that supported the houses, all of this symbolic nourishment just barely out of reach for the dog when he rose onto his hind legs and put his paws on the shelves. He kept glancing at a nearby security guard between fresh attempts, then finally gained enough courage to try and hop a bit while reared up and get his teeth nearer an open cup. The security guard started yelling, the dog ran.
